Montessori is a hands on, individualized type of learning which moves from the concrete to the abstract at the pace of the child.  The teacher guides the students' learning by conferencing with each one individually.  Through these meetings, a work plan is developed and carried out by the child with guidance from the teacher as necessary.  Lessons are given on a readiness basis and new work plans are developed as the child accomplishes his or her goals.  Work plans are designed to be manageable and attainable in a short amount of time, usually a week, in order to foster a sense of accomplishment and pride in work.  Students are not compared to the class as a whole or to other students but to their own past accomplishments.

Montessori students typically outperform their same age peers in traditional settings simply because they are allowed to work at tasks that they have helped plan.  They have the freedom to move around the classroom in order to access the materials they need.  The classroom is always controlled through the mutual respect the students are taught to have for each other, themselves and the teachers.  Self-control, patience and concentration is a built in by product of a Montessori education.
